"Anodizing Basics"

  • Jewelry Craft and Design Expo, Tucson Gem Show Embassy Suites by Hilton Tucson East | 6555 E Speedway Blvd Tucson, Arizona 85710 United States (map)

Time to bring your jewelry's color pallet to a whole new level!! This workshop will cover the basics of anodizing titanium to give the lightweight and inexpensive metal vibrant and durable colors in a multitude of shades and layer variations. Anodizing titanium is an electrolytic process of forming an oxide layer on the surface of the metal that increases resistance to corrosion and wear that is decorative and durable. Anodizing titanium with an electric current produces a much wider range of colors than the alternative of heat-treating. The colors can be controlled, easily giving you the ability to choose exactly the colors you wish to produce; given that you follow each step precisely while controlling the voltage applied to the metal. We will be layering and stacking colors by using resists applied to the titanium. We will also roller print a sheet of silver that will be riveted to the bracelet after anodizing. This is a basic introduction to anodizing but with practice and a bit of creativity this technique can be used in a wide range of applications to give your work a pop of color that will stop people in their tracks! Students will anodize two sheets of titanium and will choose one sheet to form into a bracelet, choosing either a rectangle or a disc to roller print and rivet to one of the sheets of titanium. The other sheet will be taken home to do what they choose with.
